(Kelso, WA) – The Lower Columbia softball team got a great pitching performance and clutch hits to earn a much needed split against Southwestern Oregon on Wednesday April 3
rd.
The third ranked Lakers defeated the fourth ranked Red Devils 7-5 in the first game, but LCC came back to get a 9-1 victory on the nightcap.
Game One – Southwestern Oregon 7 Lower Columbia 5
Down 4-1 in the bottom of the 5
th, the Devils got a huge three-run homer from
Sawyer Stenson to tie the game 4-4. But the Lakers came up with three of their own in the top of the sixth, chasing LCC starter
Teeghan Reams.
Alli Heater made her return to the circle after missing a few games due to illness and she ended the rally by getting a groundout.
Down 7-4 in the bottom of the 7
th,
Lexi Grumbois hit a solo homer but SWOC held on for the victory.
Reams actually pitched well in taking the loss. The Lakers two runs in the first inning were unearned. Reams went 5 2/3 innings. Heater finished off the game allowing just one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Game Two – Lower Columbia 9 Southwestern Oregon 1
Sadie Knutson was outstanding. The sophomore right hander allowed just one hit in six innings. Tori Goodell hit a solo homer off the scoreboard but otherwise Knutson was dominating. She struck out 10 batters and walked just two.
Karlee VonMoos got a five run fifth inning going with a long, solo homer to right center field. It was her first college home run.
Joelie Eder followed with a sacrifice fly,
Raychel Squibb hit a two-run double and
Brooklyn Loose hit an RBI single.
Up 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth, VonMoos ended the game early when she slugged a bases clearing double that scored three runs. Under scoring rules, VonMoos only got credit for a run scoring single. She was greeted by her teammates happy to end the game in walk-off fashion.
Leanna Russell was 4 for 4 with two RBI's.
The Devils are 9-3 in ultra-tough South Division. SWOC falls to 11-3. Mt. Hood is on top of the standings at 12-2.
Lower Columbia will make up previously rained-out doubleheader on Friday April 5
th. Clackamas will be in town for a 3 pm twin bill at Tam O'Shanter Park. LCC then heads to Vancouver for a 12 pm doubleheader at Clark on Saturday April 6
th.
